If You're on a GLP-1, You Need to Read This Before Your Next Dose.

▶ Watch the 90-second version. Dramatization featuring the real products.

Constipated for a week. Bloated and burping. Exhausted by 2pm and weaker than before they started. We spoke to dozens of women on a GLP-1 medication, and heard the same story on repeat.

A woman sitting in a small bathroom, head in her hands
"Six days without going to the bathroom." On the leading weekly injection, constipation was reported by more than twice as many patients as on placebo. Photo: reader-submitted, dramatization.

Read this if you are:

  • Currently on a GLP-1 medication, the weekly shot or the daily pill, and it's working
  • And lately: backed up for days, bloated and burping, wiped out by mid-afternoon, and quietly wondering why you feel weaker and less like yourself than before you started

If that's you, nothing is wrong with you. And it isn't "just the shot." Keep reading.

About one in eight American adults is now on a GLP-1 medication, and the number is climbing every month. The medication works. For most of the women we spoke to, it was the first thing that had ever worked, and none of them wanted to stop.

Then, somewhere around month three, a second story starts. It doesn't show up in the brochure. It shows up in the bathroom.

"Nobody warned me about this part."

The complaints are remarkably consistent. Across patient forums, pharmacy review sites and the women we interviewed, the same five problems come up in the same order.

"Six days without going to the bathroom. Six. I felt like a balloon and I was scared something was actually wrong with me."‡

Dana, 47 · reader photo

"I'm lighter than I've been in twenty years and I had to sit down on the step with the groceries. Twice."‡

Karen, 54 · reader photo

"I called my doctor and said I can't be this tired all the time. She said, drink more water. That was the whole answer."‡

Linda, 61 · photo by her daughter

"The burps are something else. My husband left the room. And I'm still bloated at bedtime."‡

The official labels are blunt about it. On the leading weekly injection, 24 percent of patients reported constipation, against 11 percent on placebo. Fatigue was more than double the placebo rate. Nausea and bloating were reported by nearly half. None of this is rare. It is the ordinary experience of the medication, and almost nobody is told what to do about it.

The mechanism

Eat 30 percent less food. Get 30 percent less of everything in it.

Here is the part nobody explains at the pharmacy counter. These medications work by shrinking your appetite. That is the whole point. But when your plate shrinks by a third, it doesn't just lose calories. It loses a third of the protein, fibre, iron, magnesium, vitamin D and water that used to come with the food.

Your body does not stop needing those things. So it takes the difference from wherever it can: muscle and energy first. Dietitians call it the nutrient gap. Patients call it "the part nobody warned me about."

How it unfolds, month by month

Weeks 1–8Less fibre, less water. Digestion slows and backs up. The sulphur burps start.
Month 2–3Iron, B12 and magnesium run low on 800 to 1,000 calories a day. The afternoon wall. Cramps at night.
Month 3–4Bloating and burps settle in. A stomach that empties at half speed, fed too little fibre, stays uncomfortable for hours after a small meal.
Month 4+Muscle goes with the fat. "I'm weaker than before I started." Hip bone density fell 2.6 percent in one GLP-1 trial.
If you stopLess muscle means a slower metabolism. Weight returns at roughly 0.8 kg a month, and the food noise comes back with it.
Why the usual advice fails

"Drink more water" is not a plan.

Every woman we spoke to had tried something. Most had tried several things. Almost none of it was designed for a person eating a third less food with a stomach that now empties at half speed.

"Just eat more protein."They can't. Appetite is the one thing the drug has switched off. Shakes are "thick, chalky, and make me gag."
A regular multivitaminBuilt for three full meals. Uses a harsh form of iron that a slowed stomach can't tolerate. Nothing for muscle, fibre or hydration.
Fibre sachets from the drugstore"Gritty." "Tastes like glue." "Caused more gas than it fixed." Abandoned within two weeks.
Sports electrolytes"Too salty, too sweet." Many dilute one packet into 40 oz just to get it down.
A second coffee at 2pmMasks the wall for an hour. Does nothing for the iron, B12 and magnesium that are actually missing, and makes the 3am wake-up worse.
A $150 "clinical stack"Six bottles, a shaker and a spreadsheet. "It lasted nine days."
"The problem isn't that these women aren't trying. It's that everything on the shelf was built for a person who still eats three meals a day."Registered dietitian, interviewed for this piece
What they did instead

Then a few of them started doing something different.

The women who turned it around had, almost without exception, stopped trying to eat their way out of the gap. Instead they had settled on three rules.

1. Denser, not bigger. If you can only manage a few bites, every bite and every capsule has to carry more. Ten-calorie greens, not a smoothie. Two capsules, not six.

2. Gentle on a slowed stomach. The chelated forms of iron and magnesium that don't cause nausea. Ginger. No stimulants. Nothing that fights the medication.

3. A routine they could actually keep. Tied to things they already did every day: the morning coffee, a glass of water, bed. Three minutes, not a project.

One brand has built its entire line around exactly those three rules, for exactly this person. It's called Luumi, and its five products are designed to be taken together as a single daily routine. We looked at each one.

Dana, 47

"Shot day used to wipe me out. Now I'm normal tired, not zombie tired."‡

Tasha, 41

None of the women described a miracle. What they described was quieter than that: going to the bathroom like a normal person, getting through an afternoon without the wall, carrying the groceries, and feeling like the person they were before. "Not a miracle," one told us. "I just feel like myself."

What women like you are saying

"The daily ritual changed everything."

The new daily ritual

Imagine the first morning you don't have to think about any of it.

Coffee with the creamer stirred in. Two capsules with breakfast. A glass of greens at your desk, the reds after lunch. That's the whole ritual, and the women who keep it describe the same thing: the bathroom stops being a worry, the afternoon stops being a wall, and the groceries come in one trip. Not a project. Three minutes, and then you get on with your day.

Questions
Is it safe to take alongside a GLP-1 medication?

The Routine is nutrition: vitamins, minerals, creatine, collagen, fibre and probiotics. It contains no stimulants and nothing that affects appetite, blood sugar or the medication itself. As with any supplement, show the labels to your prescriber before starting.

When do people notice something?

Digestion and hydration first, usually within one to two weeks. Energy over three to four weeks as iron and B12 build. Strength follows once you're training again with enough protein and creatine on board; give it six weeks.

What does it taste like? My taste has changed.

Creamer: vanilla, in your coffee. Creatine: light lemon. Reds: mixed berry. Greens: mild and unflavoured, so mix it with the Reds or juice if you're sensitive. Capsules: no taste.

Is it a full month's supply?

GLP-1 Support, Creatine, SuperGreens and SuperReds are 30-day supplies. The Collagen Creamer is 12 servings, so most people use it on the days protein is hardest, or add a second tub.
